Are you looking for an exciting and engaging way to challenge your students? Teach sudoku!
Using sudoku in the classroom is great for:
- Promoting independent learning
- Challenging early finishers with a non-busywork activity
- Keeping student’s minds active over long breaks
But there are 3 other major benefits that students can get by working on these puzzles.
3 Reasons to Teach Sudoku
1. Perseverance
Students will have to try different combinations to correctly complete a sudoku. This can be frustrating for many students, but it can also help them to embrace challenges in the long run.
2. Critical Thinking Skills
Different strategies can be used to solve these challenging math puzzles. This requires students to practice and fine-tune their critical thinking skills in order to solve them. The more sudoku students solve, the more they improve their ability to think critically.
3. Confidence
There is nothing like the feeling of being successful after a difficult challenge. Students will gain confidence in their capabilities after solving a sudoku. If they can solve a challenging puzzle, there is no limit to what else they can accomplish!
Are you ready to teach sudoku to your students but are unsure of the rules?
Don’t worry! They are not as intimidating as you might think.
What are the Rules for Sudoku?
- Sudoku may come in different sizes but they all have a few things in common. They all have shaded and non-shaded sections, they all have rows, and they all have columns.
- The main goal is to places numbers 1-9 in each section, each row, and each column without repeating any of the numbers in each section, each row, and each column.
- Therefore, in order to solve each puzzle, students must figure out to to fill in each square without repeating numbers in each section, row, or column.
